Flip 'n' Dip are a pair of sibling monkeys, living in a jungle in Africa, who got their own series of comic stories in the pages of Tom & Jerry comics. Flip is the brother monkey and Dip is the sister monkey. Their parents, Ma and Pa, appear in many of the stories, but are never given full names beyond Ma and Pa.
Like Tom & Jerry and Barney Bear, they first appeared in Our Gang #1, August 1942. The first story, like most Dell/Western Publishing comic stories of the time, was untitled. The story was written by Gaylord Du Bois with art by H. R. McBride.
In most of the stories, Flip 'n' Dip get into mild trouble, and then get themselves out, or are saved.
Character Design[]
The character design of these monkey characters tends to evoke an uncomfortable racial stereotype common in depictions of Black people in some American popular culture of the era.
Appearances[]
Flip 'n' Dip appeared in over 100 of the Dell era issues from Our Gang #1 in 1942 through Tom & Jerry #170 1958. They also appear in many of the international reprint comics.
