Plot[]
The episode opens with a shot of an island in Hawaii, then shifts to a first-person view of Tom, who is on a vacation. However, his peace and quiet is rudely interrupted; Jerry arrives, on a vacation of his own. Tom moves his chair several times in an attempt to get away from Jerry, but no matter where Tom goes, he can't get any peace and quiet, not even at the top of a palm tree. With his patience worn thin, a chase between the two begins, with Jerry leaping into a totem pole. He proceeds to taunt and attack Tom in various ways, causing Tom to pick up a smaller totem nearby and begin to wallop the taller pole. He manages to knock Jerry off the totem and grab him, but before he can do anything else, the taller totem proceeds to fall, narrowly missing both of them.
The ground soon begins to shake, leaving Tom and Jerry worried. Tom puts the smaller totem back into the ground to try and stop the shaking, but it doesn't work. An active volcano on the island suddenly erupts, and strange music begins to play. Upon hearing the music, Tom and Jerry fall into a trance-like state, causing them to start moving towards the volcano, dancing along the way. They soon enter the volcano through an opening shaped like a mouth, and continue to wander across a pool of lava.
A stalactite suddenly lands on Tom's head, freeing him and Jerry from the trance, and he realizes that they are now in the volcano and he is walking on the lava. Frightened and in pain, he rushes towards the nearest piece of ground he can find, where he sits down to catch his breath. Then, an ominous female voice begins chanting and screaming, and the ground begins to shake once more. Jerry hides in Tom's shirt pocket, while Pele, the goddess of flame, soon materializes behind Tom, leaving him terrified. Pele casts a strange spell upon Tom, but he manages to escape and finds a shield he can use as a raft, with a spear serving as an oar.
Pele then attacks Tom using blasts of fire, causing a large wave of lava to form. Tom manages to surf the wave towards the volcano's exit. Jerry realizes they are surfing the lava and covers his eyes with his ears out of fright. Tom continues to ride the wave, while Jerry uncovers his ears, thinking they'll make it out. However, Pele summons two hands from the lava to attack Tom: one above him and one in front of him. He manages to dodge both hands, but then sees Pele right in front of him. Screaming in terror, he jumps off his "raft" and rushes for the exit, with Pele trying to attack him all the way.
Tom and Jerry manage to escape the volcano, but Pele follows them out. Tom runs as fast as he can but stops upon reaching the edge of a cliff. Pele manages to catch up to them and stands tall before them. Tom backs away, but starts to stumble as he reaches the edge. Jerry peeks out of Tom's shirt pocket and waves to Pele. To both his and Tom's surprise, Pele is frightened at Jerry's presence and screams one last time, reducing herself to a measly crackle. This allows them to finally extinguish her. Afterwards, the two decide to put their differences aside for the time being and enjoy their vacation together.
Censorship[]
- The scenes of Pele were cut out on future Boomerang airings in Asia, likely due to her sexually suggestive appearance, although her face was briefly shown. Despite this, it is shown in the USA.
