Horticulture Clash is the sixteenth episode of Tom and Jerry in New York.
Synopsis[]
When misinterpret Armand's statement, Spike gets himself fooled into servitude for Tom.
Plot[]
The episode begins at the hotel's main corridor. Spike can't sleep, because Tom and Jerry are causing chaos in the environment as usual. When the ceiling gets damaged and Tom falls in front of Spike, the bulldog grabs the cat and yells at him about trying to get some sleep. Once he's done with screaming, Spike threatens Tom that he will be sorry of disturbing Spike, then the dog places Tom inside a flower pot above Spike's sleeping pillow and leaves him there. Tom attempts to creep down, but Jerry spoils the plan with bubble wrap. Tom stumbles and causes noise, which wakes up Spike. The infuriated bulldog grabs Tom, wraps him in the bubble wrap, and spins him at the opposite corner of the corridor, releasing Tom from the pot in a rather violent way. While spinning, Tom sets the suitcases on the tray using impact and breaks a pot with a ficus plant.
Having disposed Tom, Spike heads towards his pillow, hoping for some rest. At the same time, Armand is checking the flower pot and is complaining about his favorite ficus plant pot being smashed to bits, which harms the plant as well. Armand approaches Molly with plant removed from broken pot and complains loudly about the harm the plant received, calling the culprit "a maniac". Spike overhears it and wakes up immediately; he believes that Armand is complaining about Tom's bodily injuries Spike has caused. The bulldog declares he shall look after Tom, who is sleeping on his pillow at the moment.
Spike wakes up Tom and offers him a care. While Tom is considering the offer, Spike runs to bring Tom a gift. Shortly afterwards, saddened Armand disposes the plant. Tom quickly combines Spike's will to serve with damaged plant and bursts into laughter. In the meanwhile, Spike returns with a large fish. Jerry approaches and expresses amazement. Tom lands on his pillow and imitates trauma, by holding his head in feigned pain. Spike explains Jerry, that Tom requires care due to his condition. Jerry shows an angry face expression and gets kicked by Tom off his pillow. Tom simulates weakness and climbs from his pillow, then he leans on Spike and scratches his torso, pretending that he cannot hold himself on feet. Spike yells, then he grabs Tom only to get punched in his face. "Unconscious" Tom is pointing at the steak on Spike's bowl. The bulldog willingly agrees to give it to Tom, who quickly devours it from prone position.
Jerry finds a plant leaf in the waste basket, then he shows it Spike. The bulldog believes that Jerry is suggesting to take Tom to fresh air, so Spike compliments Jerry's thinking. Tom points at the ceiling, which means he wants to go to the roof. Because the elevator is broken, Spike has to use stairs while Tom is encumbering him. The effort exhausts Spike - he puts Tom on the surface, then he takes the hose and prepares to take water from it. Tom interrupts this by leaping on Spike and showing, that he wants to come back down. Spike does as he is told. Once the animals make it to the corridor, Spike is feeling dizzy from exhaustion and eventually falls down. Tom lands safely and spots a cart with soda cans. He shakes them, then he approaches Spike and asks to fetch him soda. The bulldog does as he is told - he opens the first can in reach and gets the beverage spilled. Jerry is watching the scene while drinking soda using a straw. Tom is laughing at the scene.
Spike is opening another soda can and the issue repeats itself. Tom demands additional soda cans to be shaken by Spike and then opened. Spike is starting to suspect a plot, so Tom simulates injuries once again. Spike carries out Tom's demand and gets the beverage spilled into his face from shaken soda cans. Tom is clapping. Jerry has enough and bites Tom at his tail. Spike notices that and gets after Jerry. The mouse lures the bulldog into the security room, where the incident with broken plant is played from camera. Spike stops and watches the recording. Soon, Spike realizes that Armand was mentioning the plant's injuries, not Tom's - which means that Spike was serving Tom while not being aware what exactly happened. The bulldog declares a revenge upon Tom.
In the entry hall, Tom is searching for Jerry near Spike's pillow. The bulldog approaches him and Tom starts pretending being injured. Spike imitates that he wants to do something for Tom. The cat asks to fetch him a t-bone steak from Spike's bowl. The bulldog grabs the chunk of meat, while Tom occupies his pillow. Spike states that he shall give the steak to Tom, then he slaps the cat with the meat three times in the row. Tom falls down and pulls out a white flag.
The scenery changes into the hotel's swimming pool, where Spike and Jerry are resting on sunbeds. Spike asks Jerry, if he wants more drink, then he calls Tom to fetch them lemonade. Bandaged-up Tom does so from a wheelchair, then he departs. Spike addresses the audience by saying, that if life brings someone lemons, it is best to make a cat make a lemonade from those lemons and the episode ends.

Trivia[]
- This episode marks the first of a few things:
- Spike's first speaking appearance in Tom and Jerry in New York (not counting some growls in Put A Ring On It).
- The first episode where the concierge is referred to by name. In this case, he is revealed to be named Armand.
- Spike's scratch wounds heal immediately on him, when he grabs Tom from the floor.
- Throughout the episode, Spike calls Tom "Tommy Boy", which is the same nickname Butch usually gives him.
- The way Spike believes it was Tom that Armand was referring to as being beat up and damaged by Spike, when in reality, Armand was talking about his plant, is somewhat similar to the VeggieTales short, Bob's Vacation, where Bob believes that Larry said he wasn't special, when Larry was really talking about his fern, Raymond.
- Jerry bites Tom the his episode infamous sequence of Hic-cup Pup, Tom screaming with an animation that reused Another one is from Slicked-up Pup.
