Overview

Joe Bear is a first appeared in the 1952 Tex Avery cartoon, Rock-A-Bye Bear starring Butch Dog and a minor character appearing in the Tom and Jerry Tales episode, Sasquashed, where he yells at Tom when Jerry disturbs his sleep by breaking a twig in order to protect his and Tuffy's new friend, Sheldon the Sasquatch from Tom.

Character biography[]

The bear is a cranky, irritable, obnoxious, noise-sensitive bear who cannot stand any noise and when disturbed, he often yells "SHUT UP! QUIET! I HATE NOISE! I CAN'T STAND NOISE!" and goes extremely violent and berserk and attacking about everybody, especially Butch and Tom.

Despite his severe intolerance of noise, ironically he is quite noisy himself, as he not only frequently yells loudly at whoever he speaks to, he also has a habit of frequently stomping loudly each time he gets up from his slumber, therefore effectively making him a massive hypocrite.

Trivia[]

  • He bears a striking resemblance to Barney Bear, MGM's more famous bruin character whose final cartoons produced the same year Joe Bear debuted were directed by Dick Lundy using Tex Avery's unit, albeit more cranky and irritable to an absurd degree, and obviously lacking the pleasant disposition that Barney had (and to some extent, Papa Bear from Hugh Harman's short-lived The Bear Family cartoons from 1939-1940, who was also voiced by Barney's original voice actor and creator Rudolf Ising).
    • Ironically, Tex Avery himself never directed a Barney Bear short during his lifetime.
  • Hilda the librarian from The Tom and Jerry Comedy Show episode "Heavy Booking", behaves very similar to that to Joe Bear, as she cannot stand any noise and gets cranky when disturbed even with the slightest noise as a pin drop.
