Overview

Mousequerade is the fourth episode of Tom and Jerry in New York.

Synopsis[]

Jerry hides himself in a zoo as a panda cub, while Tom finds the real panda cub.

Plot[]

At the Central Park Zoo, Tom is adored by a crowd of people, until they've announced that a panda cub will be presented to the public. People lose interest in Tom and head to the more exotic animal. Tom follows them and discovers that the visitors find a panda cub more attention worthy than him. When he tries to move closer, two men grab him and hurl him at the garbage cans. Jerry finds it amusing, thus Tom hurls an ice-cream cone at Jerry. The mouse gets hit and tastes the projectile quite tasty.

While Tom is covered in garbage, his bad side tempts him to grab some attention as the panda's playmate. Tom's bad side does not oppose this idea. The panda cub is running around the exhibit, so Tom grabs it. People are commenting this and every action Tom is performing with the panda cub. The cub somehow walks away, which causes panic inside the crowd. The zoo administration decides to close the panda exhibit, until the young panda is found. The crowd shows disapproval verbally and using gestures.

Tom attempts to follow the panda cub by climbing the bamboo the young animal used to escape. He gets ejected to the ostrich exhibit, where he gets kicked to the lion exhibit, where the locals apparently do not welcome their cousins from the big cat family. Tom gets thrown away from the exhibit and hits a garbage container, where Jerry is waiting for him. After recovery, Tom notices that Jerry does look like a panda. He develops an idea, how to distract the audience by painting Jerry with black and white paints. (similar to the circle of life from The Lion King)

Back at the panda exhibit, Tom places Jerry in lieu of the missing panda cub. While Jerry is showing off, Tom continues the search for the missing panda. The lost cub is spotted in the zebra exhibit. Once again, Tom is kicked out from the place. During his unconsciousness period, the panda cub walks past him. When Tom comes back to his senses, he spots the panda cub riding a macaw. After running two circles, the bird turns against Tom and eventually tricks him to fall into the alligator exhibit. Tom is forced to flee from initially one alligator, but winds out surrounded by three reptiles. The last of them manages to swallow Tom, but after a brief struggle inside the bowels, the alligator spits Tom high in the skies.

The cat lands in the baboon exhibit, where the baboons live in wooden houses. Tom crashes into a pillar with the central baboon house on top, which causes the entire structure to collapse. When he emerges from the rubble, he is surrounded by a mob of angry locals. At the same time, Jerry is fooling the audience by pretending to be the panda cub. The plan works perfectly, until the real panda cub returns and sits next to Jerry. The adult female panda awakens and notices one offspring too many, which causes understandable suspicion. Sniffing and licking reveals that Jerry is an impostor, thus the mouse has to flee from the angry giant panda.

The animals meet up at one of the zoo lanes. A mango hitting the ground nearby forces them to escape, since the troop of baboons keep chasing after them. One of the baboons hurls a mango at the audience and the episode ends.

Trivia[]

  • This is the second time that both the little panda and his mother have appeared since the Asian game "Tom and Jerry Chase".
  • The lion from "Jerry and the Lion" is back in this series, but on the contrary he is fierce and angry with many of him.
    Tom holding Jerry vs

Tom and Jerry (left) vs. The Lion King (right)

  • Tom is holding Jerry as a panda cub to showing to the audience is very similar to Rafiki is holding baby Simba from the 1994 film "The Lion King".
  • In the end of the episode, Tom and Jerry, are running away from the baboons throwing some mangoes.

Goofs[]

  • The lion exhibit area in the episode is composed of male lions, with no females. This is the same error as in Garfield and Friends episode The Guy of Her Dreams, when Penelope Pussycat encounters a pack composed of entirely male lions. In reality, real-life lions organize themselves into herds usually composed of one or two adult males, a couple of adult females, and the offspring.
