Tom and Jerry [Tuffy in Love][]
The story begins with Tuffy, who is clearly in love, as evident from the joyful expression on his face. As he returns home, he passes by a confused Tom, who mistakenly believes the mouse is unwell. Upon arriving at the mousehole, Jerry notices Tuffy's unusual behavior—he is affectionately combing his whiskers, a gesture he has never displayed before. Curious, Jerry questions Tuffy, who excitedly reveals that he is getting married to a she-mouse named Mabel from the barn, for whom he has developed a deep affection. Jerry is shocked by the news of Tuffy’s impending marriage.
Tuffy then asks Jerry to be his best mouse and help him propose to Mabel. Although Jerry is hesitant at first, Tuffy manages to convince him to assist. The two mice set off together, picking flowers before knocking on Mabel’s door. When she opens the door, Jerry is taken aback to see that Mabel is big and plump. Mabel greets Tuffy with a kiss, lifting him up in the process, which leads Tuffy to introduce her to Jerry. To Tuffy’s jealousy, Mabel also kisses Jerry, prompting Tuffy to ask why Jerry received a kiss. Jerry sheepishly admits he didn’t do anything to deserve it.
The two mice sit on the sofa to discuss their plans while Mabel makes tea. During their conversation, she tells Tuffy that she likes Jerry. When she asks Jerry how many lumps he would like in his tea, Tuffy becomes infuriated and warns Jerry that he’ll give him a "lump" later. Feeling frustrated, Tuffy leaves the room.
While Jerry attempts to convey Tuffy's proposal to Mabel, she misunderstands his intentions and agrees to marry him instead of Tuffy. Excited at the prospect of marrying Jerry, she scoops him up and begins to kiss him. Overhearing the commotion, Tuffy rushes back to confront them, only to find Mabel declaring her engagement to Jerry. Feeling betrayed, Tuffy calls Jerry a triple-crosser. Mabel, upset by Tuffy’s words, demands that Jerry throw the "uncouth mouse" out. Though Jerry tries to explain, Mabel interprets his hesitation as fear and decides to throw Tuffy out herself.
Tuffy is unexpectedly tossed right into Tom, who is waiting with his mouth wide open. However, Jerry quickly saves Tuffy from being swallowed. Grabbing Tuffy’s hand, Jerry urges him to run and calls for Mabel to hold the door. Instead, she slams the door in their faces, and moments later, Tom collides with it just as the two mice narrowly dodge him. They manage to escape through the window and return to their mousehole.
Once inside, Tuffy reflects on feeling sore about something before Tom entered the picture. Jerry reminds him that it was about Mabel. Recalling this, Tuffy declares that he is going to marry her. In response, Jerry gives Tuffy a good shake and insists he forget about Mabel, a suggestion Tuffy reluctantly accepts.
Toodles[]
On an ordinary Thursday morning, Tom is busy chasing Jerry around the living room and outdoors. Jerry manages to scamper to safety in the drainpipe on the side of the house, leaving Tom frustrated and waiting.
Suddenly, an automobile rolls into the driveway, and Missus walks around the house, holding a strange cat named Toodles. Tom's eyes widen in surprise as Missus introduces Toodles as a playmate for Tom. Tom is not thrilled about the idea, but Missus is determined to have her two pets become friends.
Tom and Toodles stare at each other, sizing each other up. Jerry peers out of the pipe, curious about the new addition. Toodles, with a silky voice and a blue satin ribbon around his neck, invites Tom to play a game of follow-the-leader. Tom, determined to show off his neighborhood expertise, accepts the challenge.
As the game begins, Tom leads the way through the neighborhood, taking Toodles through fences, mud puddles, alleys, and under hedges. Tom is delighted to see Toodles struggling to keep up, but Toodles surprises him by being more resilient and agile than expected.
When it's Toodles' turn to lead, he shows off his cunning and athleticism, discovering new routes and obstacles that challenge Tom. Tom, despite his exhaustion, refuses to give up, determined to outdo Toodles. However, Toodles proves to be a formidable opponent, leaving Tom battered and bruised.
Finally, Tom concedes defeat and allows Toodles to lead him to the shade, where they both collapse. As they catch their breath, Tom grudgingly admits defeat and suggests becoming friends. Toodles smiles, and the two unlikely pets begin to play together.
When Missus returns with two saucers of milk, Tom and Toodles are lying in the shade, playing happily with a catnip ball. Missus is overjoyed to see the two pets getting along and takes the opportunity to tidy up Toodles' ribbon. As Missus brushes and reties the ribbon, Tom and Toodles exchange a wink, signaling the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
Notes[]
- To avoid confusion, the fifth story in the comic with "Tom and Jerry" strip featured a white, fluffly male cat named Toodles, and not the white female cat and Tom's main love intrest Toodles Galore.
