Private Tom is the twenty-eighth episode of Tom and Jerry in New York.
Synopsis[]
Tom's military uncle, Sergrant Clayton T. McTabby, comes to visit him in the Royal Gate Hotel and trains him to be a better mouse catcher.
Plot[]
Tom is attempting to drink the milk from the receptionist, using a set of straws combined into a pipeline. Jerry sees the opportunity to snatch milk for himself. The plan is interrupted by the arrival of Tom's uncle, Sergeant Clayton T. McTabby who came to train his nephew into a more skilled mouser. The feline non-commissioned officer (NCO) notices it is 5 o'clock, so he rolls his sleeping mat and takes a nap close to his nephew, snoring loudly. Tom attempts to sleep, but he can't fall into slumber due to his uncle snoring.
Time passes, it's 3:00 at night and Tom is still suffering from insomnia. When he's about to sleep, he gets awaken by his uncle doing push-ups in the hotel's corridor. Shortly afterwards, Tom spots Jerry dining on the wheeled table and attempts to attack him, without success. Jerry easily stops Tom with a platter. Clayton witnesses his nephew's lack of skills and takes Tom for training. The jogging at the park goes poorly, as Tom doesn't seem fit for the effort - he gets so tired that he can't catch up his uncle and conceals himself in the fountain, much to Clayton's disgust.
The next part of the training involves a drill with catching net on a stick. The exercising goes well until Tom starts accidentally hitting Sgt. McTabby with his tool. After two blows and one dodged, the training is over. In the following scene, Clayton introduces Tom to a plan of an effective mouse trap. Tom salutes with such power that he slams himself, much to his uncle's dismay. The cats prepare a surprise for Jerry, which involves s floor tile on spring, a net set on a plunger, and a prepared oven switch. Shortly after Clayton puts a bit of cheese on the floor, Jerry drills from the ceiling and uses a hook on a strap to reach the cheese. As expected, Jerry jumps at the trap tile, which launches him at the ceiling. After leaving a trace upon impact, Jerry falls down, gets sucked by the vacuum cleaner, dispensed to the net plunged to the wall, and ejected by a trap switch inside the oven. Upon reaching the floor, Jerry triggers a marble bowling ball, which forces him to abandon the hotel's kitchen only to be rolled down at the hotel's entry stairs. Clayton tells Tom that his performance was outstanding and that he completed his training, thus he shall receive an award for the trap functioning - unfortunately for Tom, the award are additional exercises. His uncle directs Tom to the park in a typical army manner.
Jerry finds himself at the park, feeding pigeons from a bench. After watching the birds, he develops an idea about building his own park animals' army. The pigeons are the first, who respond to Jerry's call. The army expands with bees, turtles, and squirrels marching together against the cats. Meanwhile, Tom and Clayton are doing additional push-ups at the park. McTabby notices the approaching danger first, when he spots a swarm of bees and pigeons in the sky. The latter carry turtles in their claws, and Jerry is riding one of the pigeons. Tom is worried about the approaching park animals army, while Clayton takes it as another challenge to face.
Jerry orders the pigeons to drop the turtles from the sky. Sgt. McTabby tackles the reptiles without trouble, Tom fares much worse - at first, one of the turtle bites him, then he gets literally overrun by them. The second wave of attackers is composed of a bee swarm. The cats repel it with a water hose, before the bees reach their targets. Jerry guides the pigeons against the cats, but this aerial attack is repelled by a tennis ball machine, which grounds the birds with a hail of tennis balls. Jerry's army retreats defeated as Clayton congratulates Tom and makes him do additional push-ups.
The victory celebrations are interrupted by Clayton's mother - a feline general, who uses a helicopter to reach her son and nephew. She asks McTabby, where has he been - it seems his 24 hours pass has expired 59 minutes ago. After scolding Clayton, she commands him to leave Tom. Sergeant McTabby tells Tom to carry on and stand fast as he always says, then it turns out his mother taught him those words. After the family visit comes to an end, Tom and Jerry show white flags to each other and fall down. The episode ends.

- While repelling the park animals' attack, Tom wears an American M1 steel helmet as headgear.
- Clayton's Mother is referred to the episode's ending credits as "Lt. General Mother". Being McTabby's mother, she should be sharing family name with her son.
