Private Tom is the twenty-eighth episode of Tom and Jerry in New York.

Synopsis

Tom's military uncle, Sergrant Clayton T. McTabby, comes to visit him in the Royal Gate Hotel and trains him to be a better mouse catcher.

Plot

Tom is attempting to drink the milk from the receptionist, using a set of straws combined into a pipeline. Jerry sees the opportunity to snatch milk for himself. The plan is interrupted by the arrival of Tom's uncle, Sergeant Clayton T. McTabby who came to train his nephew into a more skilled mouser. The feline non-commissioned officer (NCO) notices it is 5 o'clock, so he rolls his sleeping mat and takes a nap close to his nephew, snoring loudly. Tom attempts to sleep, but he can't fall into slumber due to his uncle snoring.

Time passes, it's 3:00 at night and Tom is still suffering from insomnia. When he's about to sleep, he gets awaken by his uncle doing push-ups in the hotel's corridor. Shortly afterwards, Tom spots Jerry dining on the wheeled table and attempts to attack him, without success. Jerry easily stops Tom with a platter. Clayton witnesses his nephew's lack of skills and takes Tom for training. The jogging at the park goes poorly, as Tom doesn't seem fit for the effort - he gets so tired that he can't catch up his uncle and conceals himself in the fountain, much to Clayton's disgust.

The next part of the training involves a drill with catching net on a stick. The exercising goes well until Tom starts accidentally hitting Sgt. McTabby with his tool. After two blows and one dodged, the training is over. In the following scene, Clayton introduces Tom to a plan of an effective mouse trap. Tom salutes with such power that he slams himself, much to his uncle's dismay. The cats prepare a surprise for Jerry, which involves s floor tile on spring, a net set on a plunger, and a prepared oven switch. Shortly after Clayton puts a bit of cheese on the floor, Jerry drills from the ceiling and uses a hook on a strap to reach the cheese. As expected, Jerry jumps at the trap tile, which launches him at the ceiling. After leaving a trace upon impact, Jerry falls down, gets sucked by the vaccum cleaner, dispensed to the net plunged to the wall, and ejected by a trap switch inside the oven. Upon reaching the floor, Jerry triggers a marble bowling ball, which forces him to abandon the hotel's kitchen only to be rolled down at the hotel's entry stairs. Clayton tells Tom that he shall receive an award for the trap functioning - unfortunately for Tom, the award are additional exercises.
