Put A Ring On It is the first episode of Tom and Jerry in New York.

Synopsis

Tom tries to get a ring for Toodles.

Plot

The episode begins in New York morning. Jerry is waiting near the Hot dog Vendor's cart, where he observes a hot dog dropped by an unwary consumer. The vendor allows Jerry to eat the sausage with sauces on the ground. Unfortunately for Jerry, Tom manages to steal the Hot dog using an umbrella, then he eats the sausage it in front of Jerry. The mouse gets infuriated, as the cat mocks Jerry, so he attacks Tom by biting his toe. Tom jumps from pain, loses his umbrella, and proceeds to chase Jerry down the street into a claw machine. Jerry hides inside the device and Tom hits it, causing the coins to spill.

Jerry is mocking Tom and suddenly, he reveals a ring hidden under a football ball. The cat immediately thinks of getting the ring and giving it to Toodles Galore. With coins around him, Tom begins the obtain the bounty. The time passes as Tom is emptying the vending machine from items and Jerry keeps holding the ring. Tom gets infuriated, as despite he spent nearly all the money the vending machine has ejected, Jerry keeps holding the ring. The last coin is sacrificed and the crane grabs Jerry, so the ring is disposed. Unfortunately for Tom, Jerry keeps holding his intended gift for Toodles and flees away.

The chase leads to a convenience store. It turns out that Tom & Jerry reached the place when it is being closed for shoppers - first, an announcement is heard through a loudspeaker, then a wave of happy customers with stuff they bought charges headlong the exit. The animals have to hide behind a jewelry stand. When the people leave the place, the shop is being cut from the world outside, trapping the cat and the mouse inside. Jerry loses the ring, which lands on the shop's floor. The chase is resumed, as Jerry grabs the ring while fleeing from Tom. The animals rush to the electronic department, where Jerry attempts to cross tangled cables undetected, while still holding the ring. He fails by making alarm clocks fall from the shelves, which focuses Tom's attention. Jerry hides under the clock pile. His feline opponent searches the clocks, then he plugs them to electricity, which chars Jerry and shoots him right into USB plugins stand.

The chase goes on, as Tom uses a fire extinguisher to catch up Jerry. Meanwhile, two masked burglars break into the department store through the ventilation. The security system detects security violation, which doesn't scare off the criminals. They begin stealing shoes from the footwear department, not paying attention to Tom and Jerry running past them. Meanwhile, Tom's fire extinguisher hits the ceiling, which wakes up Spike. The burglars don't seem bothered by the mess happening around them. On the upper floor, Spike is tormenting Tom - before the dog manages to beat the cat, the latter uses a frying pan as a shield. Tom flees into the elevator room and makes Spike confused with changing hideouts within the elevators, where Jerry also appears. The animals bring chase between store's departments, including a run between floors. Spike gets scared in the security room, when Tom uses a video camera to laugh the dog off for a moment. The chase resumes in the bed department, where the animals jump from one bed to another. Spike gets trapped inside one of the beds, while Tom and Jerry continue the chase to the children's department.

Jerry finds another hideout inside a toy castle, where Tom cannot bail him out. The cat uses a robot to make Jerry abandon the castle, initially without result. The second attempt dismounts the toy castle. Tom finds a brown mouse, which turns out to be a toy. Meanwhile, Jerry flees again and runs to the safe, where he locks the ring. Before Tom manages to retrieve the ring, the burglars take it over with jewelry they gathered from the loot. Infuriated Tom tugs the carpet inside the mall, which causes the criminals to hit the wall, stumble, and set alarm, which directs police cars to the mall.

Tom becomes a newspaper hero and presents Toodles the ring he was struggling for throughout the episode. His female appreciates the gift with a kiss and a hot-dog she cooked for Tom. Unfortunately, Jerry bites on the hot-dog and dashes off, much to Tom's dismay as the episode ends.

Trivia

• This is the first episode of Tom and Jerry in New York.
• The episode is 5 minutes long instead of 7 minutes, as older series used to last.
• The original Toodles Galore from Springtime for Thomas is back in this series.
• The overall series' design is the same as in The Tom and Jerry Show (2014) from season two onwards but has a different background.
• Aside from growling, Spike has no dialogue in this episode.
• The Buddy Robot from the Tom and Jerry Show season 4 episode, “My Buddy Guard” reappears in this episode.
• This is the first episode in the series, when Tom and Toodles kiss each other.
• The title "Put A Ring On It" is one of the lyrics from Beyonce's Single Ladies and the cover song Single Ladies by The Chipettes from Alvin and the Chipmunks 2.
• Some of the sound effects in this episode were heard in the VeggieTales episode "Are You My Neighbor?"
