Sega is a Japanese multinational video game and entertainment company headquartered in Shinagawa City, Tokyo. Founded in 1960 by American businessmen Martin Bromley and Richard Stewart as Nihon Goraku Bussan, it became known as Sega Enterprises, Ltd. in 1965. Since 2004, Sega has been a subsidiary of Sega Sammy Holdings. It developed video game consoles from 1983 to 2001, most notably the Sega Genesis (known as the Mega Drive outside of North America). While it no longer produces video game consoles, it still produces games for other gaming platforms.
Sega's mascot is Sonic the Hedgehog, whose first game was released in 1991 for the Sega Genesis and Game Gear.
A joint venture of Sega and Sanritsu Denki, SIMS Co., Ltd. was established in 1991.
