Tom and Jerry first appeared in a comic book series called Our Gang in 1942. Seven years later, the comic book series was renamed Tom & Jerry. In this series, Nibbles was referred to as his other name; Tuffy.

Unlike the theatrical cartoons, Tom and Jerry speak throughout, as the writers thought the young readers would not figure out what they're up to with out reading their speech balloons. This book series includes other characters from MGM shorts. The series continued its numbering into the Western run when the two companies split in 1962.

Gold Key Comics (1962-1984)[]

After the split between Dell and Western publishing in 1962 where Western Publishing retained all of the licenses to the comic properties and a good amount of the creative staff, Western Publishing continued producing Tom and Jerry comics with both new and reprinted material under the Gold Key and Whitman imprints until the Western Publishing shut down their comic book division in 1984. The numbering continued from the Dell run and ended with issue 344. Tom and Jerry also appeared in several issues of Golden Comics Digest and in many issues of March of Comics, which was a free mini comic produced by Dell/Western that shoe stores could buy and give away free to kids when they bought shoes.

Harvey Comics (1991-1994)[]

During the early 90's "Harvey Classics" era of Harvey Comics, Harvey licensed many classic cartoon characters from various studios to produce kid-friendly reprint comics, and Tom & Jerry was one of those licenses. Harvey's various Tom & Jerry comics reprinted material from the Dell/Western run. Some argue that Harvey's quality standards weren't as high as they could have been.

Through arrangement with Western Publishing many comic publishers all over the world reprinted comics from the Dell/Western run. Since then Turner, and then Warner Bros have continued to produce comics that various publishers publish all over the world. The Egmont comic series in Sweden and Norway both have issues dated 2018 and 2019, with Croatia's most recent issue being from 2017.

Mexico[]

In Mexico Editorial Novaro had a Tom Y Jerry comic that ran 896 issues from 1951-1980. The Series Avestruz series of Tom Y Jerry ran 199 issues from 1975-1983. Editorial Novaro mostly reprinted US material, in this case stuff from the Dell/Western run, but also filled in with Novaro produced original licensed content to keep the newsstands full of comics.

Editorial Novaro[]

Their output included a Tom and Jerry Kids series in the 90's and a regular Tom and Jerry series in the 00's. Australia[]

In Australia Magazine Management (Rosnock) produced Tom & Jerry comics that reprinted Dell/Western material in black and white. Sometimes as Jumbo Edition. The numbering of the Rosnock comics is hard to fathom as they usually have 4 or 5 digit issue numbers, some times starting with an (R-) and even if you arrange every comic they produced by issue number, there is still giant gaps in the numbering.

UK[]

In the UK, various publishers have held the Tom & Jerry license. World Distributors, Fleetwood, Spotlight, Egmont and probably others.

Between 1967 and 2011 Tom & Jerry got 29 hard cover UK Annuals from which ever publisher had the license that year. And another 12 annuals were produced between 1970 and 1993 with names like Comic Album and Giant Television book. During the Western Publishing era these annuals reprinted US comics from the Dell/Western run. After that They featured comics from the various UK weeklies, puzzles, activities, and material from the Egmont comics.

There was also a Tom & Jerry Weekly comic series and Tom & Jerry appeared in various other weeklies like TV Comic Weekly. Tom & Jerry Weekly often featured US reprint material, but in the various TV Comic Weekly titles these were often 1 page comics in a larger tabloid shape with at least twice as many panels as would appear in US comics.
