The Tom and Jerry Show is a 2014 television series based on Tom and Jerry. The show made its worldwide debut on Teletoon on March 1st, 2014, and aired on April 6th, 2014 on Cartoon Network in the U.S. It also premiered April 7, 2014 on Cartoon Network Latin America. This show is a reboot of the 1975 series, new episodes of the show were released on the Boomerang Streaming Service in the United States,
while they are airing on TV internationally before the USA premiere.[1][2][3]
On September 3, 2019 reruns of the show began airing on Cartoon Network along with New Looney Tunes.
Plot
This reboot of the Tom and Jerry franchise follows the antics of Tom in his pursuit to catch Jerry. Each episode of the series follows either one of these scenarios:
Tom and Jerry's typical antics in a modern-day urban setting, usually set in a house owned by Rick and Ginger.
Tom and Jerry being pets to two witches named Beatie and Hildie. (This scenario is retired in Seasons 3, 4 and 5)
Tom and Jerry working together as detectives in Tolucaville (Los Angeles as of Season 2) by operating a detective agency called "The Cat and Mouse Detectives", complete with a narrator.
Jerry living in a lab with a rat companion named Napoleon, with Tom being an alley cat. (This scenario is retired in Seasons 2, 3, 4 and 5)
Tom working as a butler in a Downton Abbey property. (This scenario is first used beginning with Season 3)
Tom and Jerry living in a scary Transylvanian environment in a parody of Van Helsing. (This scenario is first used beginning with Season 3)
Initially Season 1 had two 11-minute segments in each episode. However beginning with Season 2, each episode had three 7-minute segments much like the original shorts.
Tom Kenny - Detective, Dr. Bigby, Hamster, Milfred, Tom's 1st Life, Tom's 4th Life, Tom's 5th Life, and Tom's 8th Life, Ronnie the Rabbit, Percy, Guard Dog
Even if not as commercially-acclaimed as the original shorts from 1940-1967, but definitely beaten out that said show and the next one from 1980.
This show brings back the classic chase formula and violence, unlike the 1975 series where there are cartoon regulations at the time during the 1970s which banned the use of violence in children's television.
Tom's screams and the sound effects of Tom and sometimes Jerry in the episodes are copied voice clips from William Hanna's recordings that were first recorded in the original Tom and Jerry cartoons.
This is the second Tom and Jerry television series produced in the 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio after Tom and Jerry Tales and the first to be animated in Adobe Flash (now known as Adobe Animate).
In this show, Jerry is no longer Spike's friend because Spike finally notices it was Jerry who was really responsible for bothering his son, stealing his bones and getting bothered and injured. (As seen in "Birthday Bashed" and some episodes as well.), sometimes they are shown getting along.
In this show, Tom is still enemies with Jerry, Spike, Tyke, Tuffy, and Quacker. (However, with some exceptions.)
In this show, Tom and Butch are sometimes enemies.
In this show, Tyke is still friends with Jerry.
In this show, Tom is sometimes shown to be good friends with Spike, and Jerry, and sometimes likes/tolerates Tyke, and Tuffy.
This is the first Tom and Jerry TV series to receive a TV-PG rating in the United States. Perhaps because starting in 2010, most cartoons that aired on the network, such as Adventure Time, Regular Show, The Looney Tunes Show, and Teen Titans GO!, received that rating.
Like most Tom and Jerry TV series and movies, Tex Avery characters such as Droopy occasionally make guest appearances. Though no Tex Avery characters have appeared in Season 1, they were slated to appear somewhere in Season 2 or 3, evidenced via later episodes such as "Double Dog Trouble" and "Kid Stuff".
Toodles Galore is explicitly altered in this show, as her attitude and appearance equal to that of Toots.
Beginning with Season 2, not only do the episodes now have three 7-minute segments instead of two 11-minute segments as for Season 1, yet the art style of the show was retooled to more closely resemble the style of the original MGM shorts, and the Flash animation used in this show appears to be much looser and more fluid like the original MGM shorts.
Rick and Ginger's house in this show, both interior and exterior, seem to be designed and colored with almost the exact same designs and colors as the house which most of the Chuck Jones-era Tom and Jerry shorts are usually set in, such as the use of red walls and green carpeted floors for its indoor design, the purplish colors used in Jerry's mouse-hole, the blue-tiled, yellow-walled kitchen with white furniture, and the backyard fenced up with blue hedges.
The modern-day urban setting and detective episode segments are the only scenarios to appear in all five seasons.
