Synopsis[]

Jolly ole England is the setting for this tack on Oliver Twist. We begin at a Mouse Orphanage where Toliver, who looks like Jerry, is in line for his gruel. He is served some porridge by the Rat Headmaster which Toliver eats rather quickly. Toliver, in an awful British accent, asks for more and is promptly thrown out in the snow. Toliver walks a block and looks in the window Sir Thomas Chubb's residence and sees Tom feasting at a table full of food. Toliver wonders if Sir Thomas like orphans as He crawls under the door to get inside. Toliver then heads to the table and begins nibble on the food which draws Tom's attention, who is displeased to see a mouse in his home. Tom proceeds to attack Toliver with a ladle, but Toliver dodges the blows and runs into a roll of Swiss cheese. Sir Thomas then slices the cheese with His claw and gets at Toliver, but the mouse is too quick. Toliver runs from the table, but Tom is in hot pursuit and corners the poor orphan. Sir Jerald Mouse sees the action and comes to Toliver's rescue.

We then see Toliver tell his story to Jerry who is determined to help Toliver and his fellow orphans get food. As Tom is going to bed, he ties a string around a turkey and his toe so that he can be made aware of any food thievery. Jerry is one step ahead of Tom and removes the string and attaches it to a pole axe held by a suit of armor near Tom's bed. tom pulls the string and the axe comes crashing down on his bed and him. Tom gives chase and there is a  duel between His sharpening steel and Jerry's carving fork on the dinner table. Tom gets the upper hand in the fight by blowing pepper in Jerry's eyes, but Toliver comes to Jerry's rescue. As Tom is stunned, the two mice try to make off with the turkey, but Tom recovers and decimates the turkey with the steel. Jerry and Toliver manage to send Tom crashing down into the basement to land into a vat of rice pudding. as Tom was drowning, Toliver suggests getting Tom out of the vat, only because it would be such a waste of pudding.

Toliver then relates his sad, sad tale to Sir Tom while Jerry plays the violin. Tom sheds tears of sorrow and agrees to help as Toliver heads back to the orphanage to get the rest of the children as He gives the Miserly Rat His comeuppance, as Toliver throws porridge in the Rat's face and the other orphans follow him back to Tom's house. We then see a happy dinner with all the orphans cheering the generosity of Sir Thomas and Sir Jerald.

Trivia[]

  • This episode is based on the story "Oliver Twist", written by novelist and social critic, Charles Dickens who is also known for writing "A Christmas Carol".
  • This segment, "Boomer Beaver" and "Pony Express Droopy" were aired four days before the release of Tom and Jerry: The Movie.
  • This is the episode is the first episode to reveal Jerry's first name to being "Jerald".
  • This story involved redemption for Sir Thomas Chubb (Tom) who started who was greedy and selfish and having a meal for himself, but after being saved by Toliver and Sir Jerald (Jerry) from drowning in a tub of rice pudding (which happened to Toliver's favorite food) and Toliver told Sir Thomas told him about his fellow orphans at Misery-R-Us and how they were treated there, this has humbled Sir Thomas and he invites Toliver's friends for a big feast with better foods at his house.

Animation errors[]

  • As Tom was drowning in the rice pudding vat, his eyes were white instead of yellow.
  • When Toliver told the story to Tom, Jerry is seen without his wig.

Anachronisms[]

  • The name Misery-R-Us is a play on the toy retailer chain Toys 'R' Us, although the story takes place in the 19th century and Toys 'R' Us was established in 1948, and has no relation to the toy retailer chain at all.
