Toots the Terrible is the thirty-sixth episode of Tom and Jerry in New York.
Synopsis[]
After her date with Tom in the hotel's cafe gets spoiled by Jerry, Toodles attempts to catch him, so she can spend more time with her boyfriend.
Plot[]
Tom and Toodles are enjoying their date by drinking latte in the Royal Gate Hotel's cafe, until Jerry disturbs them. The mouse tries to eat the cherry from on top of the latte. Tom spots his presence and spits out his latte at Toodles' face, then he chases after Jerry until he bumps into the concierge of the hotel. Armand takes Tom and Toodles out of the hotel, snatching the latte from Toodles at the same time, then he explains that the latte was for guests only. Toodles tells Tom that their romantic date is ruined because he is more focused on chasing Jerry and she does not understand the appeal of chasing and catching mice. Therefore, she asks him to show her the fun of chasing mice tomorrow. The next day comes and Toodles arrives prepared with a mouse-chasing kit, basically a backpack equipped with mousetraps, net, and night vision goggles. Tom laughs as he finds his girlfriend's gear amusing, then he shows her that all that equipment wouldn't be necessary.
Tom shows Toodles what he considers as "the proper way to catch a mouse", as she is examining her backpack and finds a chunk of cheese. She places it by Jerry's mouse hole to lure him out, so Jerry can be pounced, Tom returns to Toodles to show that he did not catch anything. Toodles had done her research that mice would use an air vent to escape, but Tom isn't somehow convinced. This theory proves to be correct as Jerry is seen coming out a of another air vent. Tom pursues Jerry inside a labyrinth of pipes. As a result, the two get out through a vent, Tom then chases Jerry inside the cushions, as they’re inside the construction. Jerry whacks Tom with a bat every time he comes out, while Tom finds small amounts of money, missing keys and even Butch, who got lost himself inside the cushion. Another whack drops the black alley cat in the floor with other valuables. Later on, Tom searches the entire couch to find many objects inside of the sofa, while Jerry escapes unnoticed.
When Toodles looks inside her backpack, she finds an air horn, and uses this device on Jerry. The sound bursts his eardrums, allowing Toodles to successfully catch Jerry. As she is making her research that loud noises can disrupt their balance, Tom insists on showing Toodles "a better way how to catch mice", so they release Jerry. Tom demonstrates this inside the kitchen by placing a sheet with cheeses in a table, then Tom and Toodles hide. Jerry approaches the table for cheese, while Tom sneaks on Jerry. Toodles interrupts Tom and tells him that will be "dangerous". Tom denies and leaps on the cart that takes him riding until he goes into the fountain. Toodles shakes up an extinguisher then ride on it to pursue Jerry. Once again, she successfully catches Jerry - thanks to the equipment. A moment later she tells Tom that she understands why he likes catching mice. Tom is happy that she is now feeling the thrill of mousing.
Toodles gives Jerry a head start, by running at the ground level, while Toodles swings from the top. She jumps from the couch to get into the bookshelf, causing the books to fall down upon Jerry which the mouse however covers himself from the falling books by holding a book. Toodles then throws her belt of mousetraps that Jerry nearly avoided. Toodles jumps down the curtain, then she slides down and catches Jerry. Tom sees that his girlfriend has caught Jerry again. Toodles feels generous and lets Jerry run away for another round. This time Toodles and Tom both go after him, as Jerry heads through the elevator in the floor with a pool area. Toodles arrives through the stairs. Jerry swims in the pool, so Toodles dives inside. Jerry tries to swim away from Toodles she goes in the pool but paddles Jerry to the shore. Toodles admits that she enjoyed the cat-and-mouse chase and she asks Jerry if he'd go again. Jerry accepts. Tom comes from the elevator and notices Toodles holding Jerry up. Tom misses and falls into the pool. Later on, another round begins when Jerry goes in the elevator and Toodles runs in the stairs, while Tom tries to reach shore.
Toodles runs up a lot of stairs. After a longer journey, she makes it to the roof, as Jerry is just making it to the roof by elevator. Toodles chases him up to the "Royal Gate Hotel" billboard. As Toodles watches Jerry, who is safely climbing down to the balcony the mouse trying to escape from on the balcony slips on a banana peel slips off the building. Tom makes it upstairs to see Jerry falling down the building. The sight gets him shocked, but Toodles grabs on to two pigeons. Tom runs to the balcony to see what is happening. Toodles travels in the air with the pigeons and catches Jerry with her mouth. At the same time, Tom runs out the entry of the hotel, while Toodles lands safely with captured Jerry. Back on the ground, she counts how many times she has caught the mouse, then she shows the tally to Tom. Her boyfriend gets shocked and shows pride with a grin. The mood quickly turns gloomy, then he walks back inside the hotel, realizing that Toodles mouse-catching is superior to his. Toodles feels empathy towards Tom, so she tells Jerry that he owes her.
Toodles approaches Tom while using Jerry as with a paddle ball. Tom sits in the chair while feeling grumpy, then he turns away from her as Toodles tells him that she has been having all the fun catching Jerry, as she tries to get his attention, he turns away until, so Toodles drops the paddle ball with Jerry intentionally, Toodles tells Tom that Jerry is getting away, as she tells him that he'll have to catch him, Tom becomes convinced and chase after Jerry. Trivia[]
- Toodles is shown to be a more skilled mouse catcher than Tom.
- She (or a similar character) has already proven to be such in the 2021 film. However, in said movie, Toots acts more wild/feral trying to catch Jerry, while in this short, Toots shows up at first with human hunting gear that Tom laughs at.
- She can swim as well, especially since she probably does not hate water like most cats.
- She is also acrobatic and also a very fast runner, especially on stairs that she beats Jerry (who was using the elevator) to the rooftop and without even tiring herself out.
- Also unlike Tom, she chases mice, especially Jerry more for the fun and excitement, while Tom chases Jerry due to his hatred of Jerry, sometimes to eat him. Toodles has no intention of eating or bringing harm to Jerry or any mice.
- This episode is somewhat similar to The Tom and Jerry Show (1975) episode, The Police Kitten with a white-furred female cat doing better than Tom.
- Expect the white-furred female cat in the episode of 1975 show, Katy O'Kitty was a one-time character exclusively for the 1975 show and also wasn't a love interest for Tom, despite being appealing herself. She made Tom and also Jerry green with envy for doing their job better than them and on her first day of the job.
- Armand said that lattes are for guests only when he snatches the latte from Toodles and drags her out of the hotel because Toodles is more of a visitor at Royal Gate Hotel because she doesn't have a room there and she lives somewhere else entirely. She just visited Tom who works and lives here. So far, Toodles probably wasn't even really welcome to the hotel unless she's an actual guest and really has a room there or a visitor for an actual hotel guest and not for one of the employees, especially Tom.
- Tom and Toodles were drinking a latte together. In real life, coffee beverages, including lattes are toxic to cats and dogs like chocolate and grapes.
- The title is kind of misleading, the character is Toodles Galore, not Toots, even though she's miscredited as "Toots" for the series and the actual Toots was miscredited as "Toodles Galore" in the previous series. She's also not the "Toots" from the 2021 film either who is less anthropomorphic and more feral, aggressive and relentless.
- Old Rockin' Chair Tom had Lightning catch Jerry better than Tom and in this episode, it has the same thing but with Toodles.
