Top of the Heap is the twenty-ninth episode of Tom and Jerry in New York.
Synopsis[]
Tom and Jerry compete against Frankie's gang of tricky rats on a trash barge.
Plot[]
Tom is chasing Jerry around the hotel. The animals stop, when Jerry gives Tom a daisy from the pot standing in the corridor. As Tom is sniffing the flower, Jerry strikes him without warning using the pot he took the flower from. When Tom regains consciousness, he keeps chasing Jerry down to the kitchen at the first floor. The animals stumble upon the cooks preparing a meal for the guests. The chef kicks both animals outdoors, right into the garbage container in the yard. The animals fight inside the container, which is carried away by the sanitation workers and eventually dumped to a barge leaving the city.
The duo wake up surrounded by garbage from the entire New York. Tom takes advantage of Jerry being confused by kicking him out of the deck into the water. Jerry emerges to the surface too far to catch up the barge cruising away, but he meets the Baby Seal (from Little Runaway), who is having trouble with a plastic six-bottle clip obstructing his nose. Jerry finds a crab to cut the plastic junk from the seal's nose. Tom is observing the scene from the trash barge's deck. Having his nose liberated from the garbage, the Baby Seal takes Jerry to the barge and helps in leaping upon the deck. Jerry waves the seal goodbye, then the protagonists examine the area they found themselves in.
When Tom and Jerry pass through quite an oddly located door, they encounter a gang of rats lead by Frankie the rat, who demands the protagonists to participate in his challenges. A seagull is elected to judge the teams performing. The first contest requires racing with rusty buckets. Tom loses against one of Frankie's rats only because his bucket has been weighted in with an anvil. The protagonists perform better at carrying boxes around the barge, mostly because Jerry distracts the gull with a hot-dog and hurls a pressed soda can at the Frankie's rat. The third competition is climbing a garbage mountain - Jerry reaches the peak as the first, because Tom stops the rats. Even so, the gull gives the point to Frankie, who has been concealed on top of the peak before Jerry reached it. Tom and Jerry lose the pole combat contest and the first part of garbage tennis. Jerry gets infuriated and strikes the ball with such power, that Frankie's rats can't deflect it, so the protagonists gain a point. Breaking a plank goes poorly for Tom and Jerry, however, they win arm wrestling contest. Later on, Tom gets his hand snapped by a concealed mousetrap, then he exchanges blows with Frankie's rats.
Suddenly, the tug reaches the destination point and the gull announces the end of the contest. Frankie's rats gain the cup as their prize, which is used to beat up Tom and Jerry off the barge. Shortly afterwards, greater rats pick on Frankie and his gang. The cat and mouse the watch the scene from the water, until the Baby Seal approaches them. The water mammal takes Tom and Jerry back to New York and the episode ends.

Trivia[]
- This is the first episode of the second season.
- Strangely, Tom does not seem to hate water. In real life, cats are afraid of water.
- The seagull's voice sounds very similar to Needleman and Smitty from Disney/Pixar's Monsters Inc.
- Coincidentally, Stephen Stanton (who voices the seagull in this episode) voices Needleman and Smitty in the movie's sequel series, Monsters at Work.
