Not to be confused with Warner Bros. Pictures Animation.

Warner Bros. Animation is the animation division of Warner Bros. Its counterpart is Warner Bros. Pictures Animation (formerly Warner Animation Group), which produces animated theatrical movies. Warner Bros. Animation is currently responsible for the production and distribution of the animated TV series and animated direct-to-video/direct-to-streaming movies based on Tom and Jerry, Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies, Hanna-Barbera, DC Comics and Mortal Kombat.

History[]

One of the studio's predecessors, Warner Bros. Cartoons, had the involvement of Tex Avery and Chuck Jones. Avery left the studio in 1941; following a stint at Paramount Pictures, he moved to the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer cartoon studio. Jones would establish Sib Tower 12 Productions in 1962 after he was fired from WB for ghostwriting the UPA film Gay Purr-ee with his wife. This is the studio that produced the Tom and Jerry cartoons from 1963 to 1967.

Beginning in 1976, Jones began to produce Looney Tunes specials at his newly created studio, Chuck Jones Productions. He eventually directed and produced The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie, which was released in 1979. Jones was later given a contract to produce Looney Tunes cartoons for every year since 1994, which was eventually terminated when he publicly criticized Space Jam.

The success of the Looney Tunes specials and feature film led Warner Bros. to open Warner Bros. Animation in 1980. Hal Geer served as the initial head of the studio.

Warner Bros. Animation has been involved in the creation of every Tom and Jerry films and TV show since Turner Entertainment merging with Time Warner in 1996.
